As a treat for winning the PIE Challenge, we went to Planet Leisure. As you know, we won £2,500 and made in total £5200 so Mrs Davison and Mrs Stephenson said we could decide on a reward for our hard work.
On Tuesday 22nd October, 18 children from Y5 went to Planet Leisure and took part in a laser quest competition which Joseph W won! Surprisingly, Mrs Stephenson wasn’t last. After laser quest, we went on the trampolines for 45 minutes; it was great fun. Many children were doing front flips into the foam pit - it was amazing. After the events, we had all had a massive combo meal between us. The food included: chicken, sausages, corn on the cob, garlic bread, onion rings and chips. “I really enjoyed the trip. The laser quest was my favourite part because it was competitive and we all had great fun.” – Alfie “This was my favourite trip at Reid Street. As the General Manager, I was proud of my team and thrilled I won the laser quest.” – Joseph “I think this was the best trip because it was out of school time and the food was amazing!” – Quincy Can you believe that 79 children fell asleep at school? We are pleased to say that it wasn’t the lessons that sent them to sleep but an organised sleepover. The first sleepover in Reid Street’s 107 year history took place on Friday 5th July. Children from key stage 2 attended and the whole event was extremely successful. The Pie challenge children learned about the hospitality business and created their own Reid Street BnB raising £960! Children began arriving at 5:30 pm with a vast array of sleeping equipment. Everyone was excited but some were a little nervous too. At 6 pm, we all headed to Magic and Mayhem where the children thoroughly enjoyed some free time charging around the indoor play area. After returning to school at 8:30 pm, supper (toast, cookies and milk) were served. Everybody was in a great mood and incredibly excited. The teachers were wondering if anyone would sleep. After taking a vote for which movie we would watch, we went back to the hall where we sat with friends and watched The Emoji Movie. Some children fell asleep straight away! The behaviour of the children was impeccable throughout the night and 90% of the children were fast asleep by 11:00 pm when the movie finished. The children began to wake around 6:00 am. Then staff arrived to make breakfast so after some early morning team games on the yard we all enjoyed either a bacon or sausage sandwich. The Pie challenge design team had created some review sheets and we were thrilled with our 4.5 out 5 star rating. Here are some of the comments: Very nice place for a first time. The price of £12 is good because it included the soft play, a breakfast, supper and a movie. Damon I thoroughly enjoyed it. The PIE Challenge have been planning it for ages and I think they pulled it off. I would definitely do it again. Olivia On Friday, the figures needed to be in. We knew we had received lots of interest from businesses wanting to sponsor us (see the Sponsorship blog). It was our job to count the sleep over total.
We had collected lots of money over the two weeks as we were counting and checking totals all the time. Jack, Tyler and Alfie had great fun counting all the money! We had over £900 as 76 children have paid. Alfie said, “It’s the most money I’ve ever counted.” Jack said, “I can’t believe we have raised that amount as when the other school arranged a sleepover they only raised £450 but charged £15:00.” Tyler who is the deputy finance manager said, “This is going to be amazing everyone is talking about it! We loved the movie night but this has raised nearly double the amount of that.” Over the last three weeks, we have been collecting money from the children who are coming to the sleep over. We have decided to run a hospitality business and have a massive sleepover. We have visited other schools in Darlington to find out about their sleep over and we even went to the local Mecure Hotel.
Our design team created an invitation/ticket which everyone got with their receipt when they paid the £12:00. Every day we collected the money and took it to the school office to keep in the safe and we gave out the envelopes with the children’s receipt and ticket. On the 12th June we the Year 4 PIE children visited the Mercure Hotel to see how a hospitality business was run. We got lots of ideas for our BnB venture from John Price General Manager and were able to look round a hotel room and see where banquets, events and most importantly breakfasts were served. As part of our business venture breakfasts would feature as a main priority.
Mr Price said,” Give your guests something memorable at the end of their visit and they will want to come back for more.” So we are thinking of things to give our residents. On Monday 20th May, we (Jack, Sophia, Jayden and Amber) visited High Coniscliffe School to find out how they organise, arrange and carry out their magnificent sleepover. We met with their headteacher Mrs. Aitken who explained that they have had a sleepover for the previous three years. It has been a huge success and she raises lots money for playground equipment from this event. We asked her many questions including: how much did you charge? How much did you make from the event? What did you have to eat? Mrs. Aitken said that they charge £15 per child and this includes cookies and milk and bacon sandwiches for breakfast!
After speaking to the head teacher, we then interviewed five Y6 children who have been to all of the sleepovers. From the children we found out that they watched a PG movie that was The Secret Life Of Pets. They also played hide and seek in the dark but Mrs. Davison said, “That won’t be happening at our sleepover!” All the children had a great time and they recommended that we should be brave enough to have a sleep over. We spoke to our headteacher Mrs. Ayto who agreed to let us have a sleepover in school. So our business is now going to be a hotel too. The PIE challenge team has successfully run a movie night so we all thought we could extend this to a sleepover and become young entrepreneurs of the hospitality world! By Jayden S, Jack Mc and Sophia M ick here to edit. We are so pleased and excited to have made it through to Stage 2 of the Pie Challenge. Last year’s Pie Challenge team shared their success story with the new group of children. Everyone was full of great ideas and after receiving our cheque for £100, we decided we needed to appoint some managers of our new business.
Children were invited to complete application forms and CVs outlining their strengths and giving examples of when they have shown certain characteristics that would benefit a manager’s role. We worked with our PIEoneer (Ian Murray) from Protraining to appoint three mangers: The Project Manager, The Marketing/Design Manager and The Finance Manager. The children answered several tricky questions incredibly well and we appointed children based on their areas of strength. On the morning of the Big PIE (Primary Inspiration through Enterprise) Challenge, the pupils participated in two activities - one engineering based and the other coding. With the help of Ian Murray from Pro Training and Mrs Stephenson - we successfully attempted the tasks set.
For the engineering activity, the pupils were required to build a small toy plane and then had to measure the distance the plane flew. Jack and Maizey both threw 6.25 meters. The children completed the coding task on a website called Coding Combat. During this, the children played a game which required the use of coding to get through each level. Joseph, George, Quincy and Sophia got to Level 14! We were thrilled. The challenge was to see how far each pupil could progress within the game. Many children completed the levels and prizes were awarded. Team work, creativity, resilience and perseverance were needed to complete the tasks and all children excelled at this. Our Pieoneer Ian Murray UK Managing Director of PROTRAINING said, ““What a fantastic group of pupils from Reid Street Primary, they all really engaged in the project Stage 1 and were keen to mirror their achievements from last year. It’s not often you leave a building feeling refreshed and energised but that’s exactly how I felt upon leaving the school premises. Joanne and Hilary are exceptional teachers and with them at the helm of the project, I just know that they will be a success”. |
