On the 9th December, we took our very talented girls football team to Eastbourne Sports Complex to take part in a National girls 6 a side football competition. The girls were competing in the Darlington round of the competition and came up against St John’s first where they achieved a comprehensive 4-0 win. The second game was a tough and crucial game against a strong Winfield team which the girls won 2-1. In the last game we unfortunately lost to St Georges 1-0. However, we were crowned the overall winners and now go through to the regional finals in February.
The girls said they felt elated and very happy about winning. This term we have been training in school for one of our most enjoyable competitions - indoor athletics. Reid Street took a team of 28 children to Wyvern for round one of the competition where we finished in 3rd place for both track and field events. The team was made up of year 5 and year 6 boys and girls. We will now take centre stage in the grand finals of Darlington on the 8th January at the Dolphin Centre.
Friday the 18th October was the annual Girls Tag Rugby Festival. Our Reid Street team comprised of 10 girls from year 5 and 6 who had trained for the event in school during their lunch breaks. Their hard work paid off when they finished the competition in 5th place.
On the 10th October, the Boys Tag Rugby team went to Mowden Park Stadium to compete in their cluster event where they finished 3rd and narrowly missed out on the finals by just one single try. The boys learnt all of the key skills to play tag rugby before and during this event. They thoroughly enjoyed the event.
This term we took two teams of 6 to play in a Basketball competition which was held at Wyvern Academy. The two teams learnt all of the Basketball rules whilst having fun and learning how to play Basketball in a competitive game.
Both teams reached the semi-final stage of the competition with one team even reaching the final against a strong West Park Academy team; unfortunately, they were runners up after a sudden death shootout decided the game. It was a great experience for all of the boys and girls who went from year 5 and 6. They now look forward to the town competitions after Christmas. On Thursday, we went to the annual Community Games. We travelled to Eastbourne Sports Complex, took part in a range of activities and enjoyed the sunshine. There were a variety of events. We took part in basketball, athletics, cricket and rugby. We enjoyed trying some new sports and working as a team.
Our successful Year 4 Mini Tennis team represented Darlington in the Tees Valley Tennis Finals. They played different winning teams from across the region and did amazingly well. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day and even though we didn’t win our children made us so proud. One of our girls, who played No. 1, won all her matches. Brilliant sportsmanship and team effort all round.
On Monday 10th and Tuesday 11th May, two of our year 5 cricket teams competed in tournaments at Feethams and Darlington RA. The standard of cricket was particularly high and our children rose to the challenge. Over the course of the two days, our children displayed superb teamwork skills and have developed skills, which will help them in year 6.
We took a team of 27 children to Primary Athletics at Eastbourne Sports Complex on Tuesday the 4th of June. All children competed well and many participated in finals. Two of our children claimed first place in the Y5 Long Jump and Y6 Chest Push. These children will now represent Darlington in the Tees Valley Final on 19th June.
On Friday 24th May, Mr Bowes and Mrs Curtis took a team of Y6 girls to play in the Girls Cricket Tournament at Feethams Cricket Club. 12 teams from Darlington schools competed in this event. The girls won all their games in the morning and came 4th overall. The girls’ performance improved as the day progressed and they demonstrated great determination and perseverance. We look forward to competing in this event next year.
On the 23rd May, Mrs Hancock and Mrs Curtis took a team of 10 boys to the Year 6 Kwik Cricket Tournament at the RA. Despite playing particularly well, the team came 2nd in the whole of the tournament and only lost by 4 runs. We are very proud of the boys and were particularly impressed with their sportsmanship attitude.
On the 7th May, we took two teams of 16 children from year 3 and 4 to compete in a Quadkids competition at Eastbourne Sports Complex. The team did incredibly well and came second in the cluster and 4th overall in Darlington – a fantastic achievement. The children participated in many events such as howler, relay, 50m sprint, standing long jump and a 400m sprint. We are very pleased with our participants and their accomplishments.
On Friday 10th May, 30 year 4 children and two year 3 girls attended the Quad Kids Competition at Eastbourne Sports Complex. They completed four events which included: standing long jump, howler throw, 400 metres and 50 metre sprint. We were thrilled with all of the children’s efforts and each child received their individual times and distances. Harry-Lee smashed the town record for 400 metres by 6 seconds and Olivia B scored the most points overall from the three schools. Our A team have been invited back to the final on Monday where we hope to continue with our success. Many parents (as always) came to support this event.
On Friday 22nd March, the boys faced a tough opponent in Harrowgate Hill School who have several District squad players. The game started at a fast pace with Harrowgate Hill taking an early lead to go 3-0 up after only 12 minutes of play. Half time was reached and the score was 5-0. During the second half, Reid Street boys did not give up and worked super hard to earn themselves a goal. They showed real determination and character to work hard to finish strongly. Our goalkeeper, Joseph, made several standout saves despite being two years younger than his opponents. The boys look forward to playing again and having an opportunity to put all their efforts to the test again after the Easter holidays. Well done, boys.
The final score was 6-1 to Harrowgate Hill School. Squad: Oisin Kieran Charlie Toby Isaac Jax Joe Tom Harry Joseph On Tuesday 12th March, many of our talented dancers took part in the annual Darlington Dance Festival at the Hippodrome. This was the finale in what has taken months of hard work and commitment from the dancers and Mrs Rimmer who choreographed the piece. The dance the children performed was to Mean Girls by Rachel Crow, which addressed the theme of bullying and how it is important to speak out. The dancers spent the morning at the Hippodrome taking part in workshops and practising their performance on stage. On the evening, the children performed to a full auditorium. The dance was not only excellently performed, but also incredibly moving. A big well done to all of the children who participated in the event, Mrs Rimmer and the family members who supported us.
